Traditional Chinese medicine (including acupuncture and Chinese medicine) treats diseases in its own way. It emphasizes restoring the balance of the whole body through adjusting yin and yang and harmonizing qi and blood.
Chinese medicine understands a disease mainly by a group of related symptoms and signs. TCM correlates a disease (or a chief complaint) to different patterns of zheng (证, syndrome). It treats a disease by treating its zheng.

Some diseases are better be treated by acupuncture, some by Chinese medicinal herbs, some by combination of both. Similarly, some are better be treated by TCM (including acupuncture), some by western medicine, some by combination of both medicines. Dr. Hu may recommend herbal therapy to you while you have acupuncture treatment or he may prescribe you herbs to counteract side effect or increase therapeutic effect of Western medicines.
Dr. Hu always seek for a therapy which bring no or minimum side effect to your body, and at the same time, this therapy should achieve a maximum therapeutic effect. He may work out an herbal formula with a number of aggressive herbs at early stage of your treatment. Soon after your disease gets controlled, he will reduce the number of herbs or replace aggressive herbs with gentle herbs.
