Da Chai Hu Tang

大柴胡汤

Indications: Shaoyang and Yangming disorder —- Alternating fever and chills, fullness of the chest and hypochondria, bitter taste in the mouth, vomiting (–Shaoyang); and firm abdominal masses or distended pain of the abdomen, constipation or hot burning diarrhea (–Yangming), T- yellow coat, P- wiry

Harmonizes & releases Shaoyang, purges internal heat (with dry feces or dampness)

Chai Hu 15, Huang Qin 9 harmonize and clear heat (destroy pathogens in Shaoyang)             

Da Huang 6, Zhi Shi 9 — purge accumulated heat in Yangming

Bai Shao 9 — relieve abdominal pain 

Ban Xia 15 — stop vomiting

Sheng Jiang 9, Da Zao 5 pieces —  SP/ST

Note: 

1) In this formula:  Sheng jiang aids Ban xiao in stoping vomiting

2) Revome Renshen/Gancao from Xiao Chai Hu Tang, add Dahuang, Zhishi, Baishao this formula

Question:

Is this formula can really relieve the exterior and interior? 

— No, though Yang ming is intherior, but Shao yang is not exterior! 

Fang Feng Tong Sheng


防风通圣散

Indications: Heat in both the interior and exterior from Wind/Heat invasion with internal Heat already present, or from Wind/Heat that invades both interior and exterior at the same time.  

Strong fever and chills, headache, dizziness, red sore eyes, trouble swallowing, nasal congestion with thick sticky yellow phlegm +

(Lung and Stomach Heat causes) dry mouth with bitter taste, distention of the chest and abdomen, constipation, dark scanty urination, T- greasy yellow coat, P- full rapid, or wiry slippery.

Expels Wind and releases exterior, drains Heat and unblocks bowels

Fang Feng 15g, Jing Jie15g, Ma Huang 15g, Bo He 15g

  —- expel wind, induce sweating

(Jiu) Da Huang 15g, Mang Xiao 15g

  —- drains Heat and unblocks bowels

Shi Gao 30g, Huang Qin 30g, Lian Qiao 15g, Jie Geng 30g

  —- clear heat in LU, ST

Zhi Zi 15g, Hua Shi 90g

  —- clear heat by promoting urination

Dang Gui 15g, Chuan Xiong 15g, Bai Shao 15g

  —- activate and nourish blood

Bai Zhu 15g

  —- invigorate SP, dry dampness

Gan Cao 60g

  —- harmonize

Note: 

Feature of this formula: Inducing sweating does not damage the exterior, purging does not damage the interior

葛根黄芩黄连汤

Indications: the exterior released incompletely and excess Heat enters the interior–

Fever, very smelly diarrhea and sweating, irritability and a sensation of Heat in the chest, asthma, thirst, sweating, yellow coating, rapid pulse

Releases exterior, clears Heat

Ge Gen 15 —- disperse exterior wind heat; raising SP qi to stop diarrhea

Huang Qin 9, Huang Lian 9 —- clear and dry damp heat in ST/intestine

Zhi Gan Cao 6 —- harmonizing

Note: 1) 7/10 interior and 3/10 exterior

          2) Pay attention to function of Gegen

Wu Ji San

五积散

five “ji (stagnation)”cold, damp, qi, blood, phlegm

Indications:  Exterior wind/cold attacks, internal cold damages —-

fever and chills with no sweat, headache, body aches, and stiff neck (are all external symptoms), abdominal fullness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and cold, diarrhea, and borborygmus (are all signs of internal cold)

(These symptoms all together may cause a stagnation of cold, damp, phlegm, Qi, and blood.)

Releases exterior, warms interior, soothes Qi flow, eliminates Phlegm, invigorates blood, reduces accumulations

Ma Huang 180g, Bai Zhi 90g — external cold

Gan jiang 120g, Rou gui 90 — internal cold

Cang Zhu 720g, Hou Po 120g — damp

Chen Pi 180g, Ban Xia 90g, Fu Ling 90g — phlegm

Dang Gui 90g, Bai Shao 90g, Chuan Xiong 90g — phlegm

Jie Geng 360g, Zhi Ke 180g — qi

Zhi Gan Cao 90g — harmozing
